Picture the kind of people you’d expect to be competing at a World of Warcraft competition, and it’s fair to say that Singapore’s PMS | Asterisk* probably aren’t them.
Yet this all-girl team – their roster has varied from five to seven, with recent member changes – compete across the world in Defence of the Ancients, a form of the famous Warcraft games. The claim to be the world’s only all-girl DotA team, and have regularly come in the top five in mixed international tournaments, as well as winning the Iron Lady Championships in Shanghai in 2010.
Yet, without meaning to sound too pre-feminist, PMS (no, the name actually stands for Pandora’s Mighty Soldiers) are probably best known for their cutesy, Cosplay-esque good looks. Their website features the group in sexy poses but also has extensive lists of their likes and dislikes. Unofficial captain Tammy Tang, aka furryfish*, is according to the group’s website ‘one of the cutest gamers around’ and likes manga by Masashi Kishimoto. Dawn Yang, or pinksheep*, plays the piano and cello and likes Neil Gaiman, while the tattooed Eliza Ong, aka MsJovial*, likes ‘experimenting with the latest nail designs’.
The gaming-as-cool-lifestyle thing goes down to the kit they play with – all the gamers list their mouse, headset, mousepad and keyboard of choice, so if you don’t have a Razer Naga mouse or a Razer Ironclad mousepad (they’re sponsored by Razer), what are you doing?
They’re currently making a few line-up changes and mastering DotA2, but furryfish* assures us they’ll be back competing soon. We hope so – these girls are awesome.
