The Insider - Fantasy Island

published on Jun 24 2008 - 15:57

Q: What ever happened to Fantasy Island?
A: Locals over the age of ten will remember Sentosa’s water park, Fantasy Island – an oasis of splash-happy fun open from December 1994 to 2001. According to an industry expert, its inaccessibility contributed to its downfall, since back then only approved buses were allowed onto Sentosa. Factor in Sentosa’s entrance fee and you have a major financial deterrent for families heading to the park (wham, another admission fee). There was also the notorious haze to consider back in the ’90s, when many were reluctant to brave the smoggy outdoors.

Subsequent tales of ride-related injuries and a drowning had a terrible impact on this once-popular playground. Sadly, Fantasy Island shut its doors after facing a barrage of bad press and low attendance. When asked about the possibility of a second coming, our source (who asked to remain anonymous) was sceptical – ‘once bitten, twice shy’, he said, as many Singaporean parents are neurotic about the ‘dangers’ of their children romping around outdoors and going on potentially wild rides. But that won’t stop the Universal Studios theme park from coming to Sentosa in 2010 – an attraction that will certainly breathe new life into Singapore’s stale amusement-park scene.

it is indeed sad, maddy, that the FI is gone. i know how u feel about the loss as i personally have some good experience of my own through that waterpark when i was an adolescent growing up. i was in sentosa about a year ago, and no more water slides... the site's completely demolished and appears to have some sort of development of unknown projects. i dont think any new water parks from anywhere in the world would bring back the precious memories FI has embedded in me.

Fantasy Island's successor is now Equarius Water Park; and I think it would be as fun as it. I've never been there, but I've heard of the incidents that happened.

I am 22 year old female from New Zealand. I have the best memory of visiting Fantasy island and WISH it was still there - I would fly back to Singapore just for this theme park as have amazing childhood memories of it. Was so so sad to hear it closed down and to hear people drowned there... have they knocked down the slides and put something in its place or is it still there, old slides and all?? Be very interested to know.
