Thailand’s pulsing capital hasn’t been depicted with this much flair and vivacity since the 1980s musical Chess; but in the exhibit One Night in Bangkok at the Forth Gallery this week, artist Chris Coles puts to paper the musical’s famous lyric: ‘One night in Bangkok and the world is your oyster’. Indeed, through vivid colours and loose shapes, Coles’ paintings portray that world, a neon depiction of Bangkok’s notorious nightlife subculture, where ‘the bars are temples but the pearls ain’t free’.
