When we first chanced upon The Presets, all we knew of them was that they lived in Sydney and had a sound unlike anything we’d ever heard. Their first album, Beams (2005), did very well in their native Australia, but Asia did not feel the first set of shockwaves produced by the duo. However, thanks to the power of the internet, they found new international listeners who were intrigued by their songwriting prowess. (Incidentally, one of our favourite tracks is ‘Worms’, which is reminiscent of the opening song on early-’90s TV show Tales from the Crypt.) It was only until recently, after the release of their second album Apocalypso (2008), that tracks like ‘My People’ and ‘Talk Like That’ hit the dance floors at Zouk and Home.

From their album covers to their lyrics, studio recordings to live performances, musicians Julian Hamilton (keyboard and vocals) and Kim Moyes (keyboard and drums) create an opera out of electronic music. Their musical theatrics include synth grunts, hand clapping and voice distortion; it’s obvious this duo invests a lot of energy in its music. For their gig this month, expect a combination of laser lights, live singing and drumming accompanied by electronic laptop beats. It’ll be impossible not to start headbanging when this Aussie nurave/ electro-punk pair starts to tweak the knobs on the decks of Home. Our only concern is whether you’ll have the strength to withstand the onslaught of hard-hitting beats and experimental melodies.
