This event has finished

The godfather of drum’n’bass, Roni Size is back in town for a blistering set with partner in crime MC Dynamite to mark three years of Home Club’s regular d’n’b night +65. The head of the legendary Reprazent collective recently reconvened with his fellow junglists for a 2008 comeback in the form of a re-released edition of their seminal double album New Forms. Besides re-edits of classic tunes like ‘Brown Paper Bag’, a fresh Reprazent release is in the works, not to mention a new solo album and a ridiculously busy touring schedule. But then again, what else would you expect from one of the scene’s most influential, in-demand DJs?

Along with a history of standard d’n’b MC collaborations (‘Lyric on My Lip’ with Tali is a personal favourite), Size has a rock-solid reputation for the heavy number of guest vocalists on his records, including beatboxer Rahzel, Zack de la Rocha (of beloved alt-rockers Rage Against the Machine), R&B singer Beverley Knight and straight-up rappers like Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man. His meticulous approach to production and unfailing ability to stay fresh in what many consider a niche genre bear testament to his talent and dedication.

As for Dynamite, this Germanborn, UK-based wordsmith has been a fixture on the drum’n’bass scene and has worked with Size as part of Reprazent for years. Nonetheless, Dynamite – real name Dominic Smith – is by no means a side act. He’s got his own albums to be proud of (including the mixtape Big Man Talk), not to mention an enviable level of versatility that has allowed him to work successfully with turntablist crew The Scratch Perverts and The Nextmen. D’n’b virgins should expect to be on their feet all night, while even the most hardened scene veterans will be squealing like schoolgirls. It is heartening to note that while drum’n’bass is on the decline elsewhere around the island (remember Union Square in the Amara, anyone?), Home Club provides a safe haven for loyal junglists and with a little luck and patronage, will continue to do so for a long time to come.

Costs: $20 (pre-sale), $25 (at the door).
