‘Holy Ghost!’ will not be the only exclamation emanating from your lips when your ears catch on to the sound coming from this New York-bred DJ duo. Made up of Alexander Frankel and Nicholas Millhiser, the two met in high school and were originally part of a live hip-hop performance group called Automato. 2004 saw the release of Automato’s self-titled album, which was produced by DFA’s all-knowing father James Murphy. Despite the album’s positive reviews and successes, Automato’s journey ended there.
Luckily for Frankel and Millhiser, they found another avenue for their music. After discovering a common love for analogue synthesizers and classic disco, the duo forged a relationship with members of the DFA team and began helping out with production and recording (Millhiser tours with The Juan MacLean live band and Frankel tours with LCD Soundsystem). As a result, the duo brushed off the dust on the synths and stepped up to the mic, and started their own production. Released in 2007 to much critical acclaim and mainstream success, their first single ‘Hold On’ pays tribute to the sound of ’70s American disco as well as Italo-disco. A great example of a disco-pop anthem, the single rocks with arpeggiated synth action, a tough bassline and Frankel’s heartfelt vocals.
After remixing artists such as Phoenix, MGMT, Moby, Datarock and Cut Copy, Holy Ghost! recorded its second single ‘I Will Come Back’. Featuring the voice of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, the single is a combination of Chicago house and New Order-inspired nostalgic pop. Although it was released only in limited-edition press through vinyl boutique Turntable Lab, the single has already been remixed by French electro funkmeister DJ Mehdi. Since then, the duo has had releases on labels as varied as Tiga’s Turbo Recordings to French label Kitsuné. Expect a combination of classic disco jams with some modern edits thrown into the mix, and listen out for a possible preview of an ectoplasmic disco sliver from their much-anticipated upcoming album.
