No matter how busy this music producer/DJ gets, his uptempo soul keeps him travelling across the globe
In the same vein as Larry Levan and Todd Terry, Humphries has been championing soulful house music since the early ’70s. While deejaying in the infamous Club Zanzibar in Newark, Humphries created a feeling unlike any other at that time – a sweet, smooth, high-powered but mellow kind of sound that infused R&B and soul with big room house.
By the early ’90s, New York/New Jersey garage and house were still largely instrumental, but his frequent trips to Europe and 1993 residency at the Ministry of Sound enabled Humphries to incorporate the best of both Western worlds. Infusing the soulful vocals of disco divas like Chaka Khan and Donna Summer with deep and dubby tribal rhythmic beats.
Shuffling between producing tracks on his own label Tony Records, remixing and deejaying, no matter how busy this Brooklyn native gets, his uptempo soul keeps him travelling across the globe to entertain thousands. You may not be in the legendary Club Zanzibar, but you can count on Humphries to create that same world at Stereolab and invite you in with open arms. Sabrina Lee
