After pulling together a line-up of the best international DJs, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival heads back to Singapore for round two of great DJ gigs (7-10 May). Time Out Singapore catches up with five performers we’re stoked to check out
ZoukOut may be top dog when it comes to annual rave-ups in Singapore, but as Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival heads over for its only stop in South-East Asia, its supremacy may be under threat. After its spectacular debut in 2008, boasting heavyweights such as M.A.N.D.Y., Âme and Diplo, WWF is back for a second time, featuring a cacophony of sounds from France, Japan, the UK, Norway, the US, Austria and our own fair island.
Organised by Kinemat, the WWF works closely with Peterson to enlist musicians representative of the new talent heard on his celebrated BBC Radio 1 show – fringe acts, underground DJs and live bands from all over the world. Kinemat’s Don Wong explains how it works: ‘We propose a list to Gilles, and then we work on how to localise it. We’re very interested in what the crowd wants. This year we even have [acclaimed Japanese DJ] Toshio Matsuura curating our special Japanese guests. We know what Gilles is about, so we propose stuff we know he’ll like.’
This year’s WWF promises to go deep with an intriguing selection of true-blue soul (José James and Taylor McFerrin), champion turntablists (DJ Kentaro), and a one-man disco inferno (Todd Terje). Stretched over four days at venues all over town, WWF 2009 ash has trained its sights on local and regional talent – think Dubwise, Aldrin, Has and Ming – without compromising on international superstars. While Zirca may seem like an odd choice for the Jack Beats gig, in true WWF spirit, we’re not fussed about the location, we’re just in it for the tunes.
When: 7-10 May
Where: Café Del Mar | Home | OverEasy | Singapore Art Museum | Velvet Underground | Zirca Mega Club
