What's in your stacks? - Nomsta*

Nomsta*1 ‘Afrobeatnik’ by Gecko Turner (Seiji Remix) (Lovemonk)
This track has a South American feel to it with its Latin horns and stabs, a spoken-word vocal in a deep male voice, sampling of a girl’s voice and a sexy sax solo in the middle – all the right elements to get the girls on the dance floor.

2 ‘Sunday Morning’ by Todd Terry (Kenny Dope Mix) (Tony US)
This Todd Terry classic-in-the-making remixed by one of the masters, Kenny Dope, warmed the floor when I opened at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival Singapore Edition.

3 ‘Put Your Drinks Down’ by Mr V (Bob Sinclar Remix) (Vega Records)
This is the essential tune to invite people onto the dance floor. And this Bob Sinclar remix just turns it into this peak-hour monster, working the track into my set as a re-invitation after the bar breaks.

4 ‘A Bit Patchy’ by Switch (Data Records)

The jackin’ percussions, the techno influence, the phat house sound, the cut-n-paste B-boy attitude gives ‘A Bit Patchy’ all the edge it deserves. If house can be schizophrenic, then this is it – thanks to the man they call Andy Taylor (aka Solid Groove, aka Switch). After all, he did coin the term ‘fidget house’.

5 ‘Tease Me’ by Chaka Demus & Pliers (‘Jungle Fever’ Mix) (Mango)
Remember the ’80s reggae-roots pop essential ‘Tease Me’ by Chaka Demus & Pliers? Well, I unearthed this B-side ‘Jungle Fever’ remix of the single and it’s Afro funky! I can’t quite believe I still can drop this track today, thanks to its simple Afro percussion loop and simple lyrics that tease.

Nomsta* plays regularly at Hacienda and Privé.
