Update: Speakeasy has moved to 50 Tanjong Pagar Rd.

Speakeasy
First published on . Updated on 22 Mar 2012.

Carved out of a Peranakan shophouse, Speakeasy’s seating capacity amounts to just four outdoor tables, but there’s not the merest whiff of exclusivity that such minimal provision might suggest. As you saunter into the bar area, a roaring twenties soundtrack floats above chic panelling and glass-filled cabinets. Ask your friendly host to pour you a wine or beer, or mix you a ‘Prohibition-era cocktail’, and settle on a comfy bench next to a friendly tortoiseshell cat. Even the opening hours seem somehow cool: just four nights a week, with $8 cocktails on a Wednesday. Evocatively blending modern pizzazz with retro-chic yet not a mite pretentious, Speakeasy amounts to the ultimate date venue. We’re almost loath to mention this tiny treasure; we’d love it to remain bar-world’s best-kept secret.

I was there on a Thursday night and it wasn't very crowded, about 3-4 tables were taken. The ambience was very nice and the place looked pretty high-end. However, the food order took more than an hour to arrive. We arrived at 7PM and the food arrived about 8:30PM. It was really surprising because it seemed no one else was having food, only drinks. Despite prompting the staff, they were not very helpful at all.

We ordered Speak's burger, a seafood pizza and truffle oil fries. However the fries that came with the burger was burnt, and tasted no different from the truffle oil fries.

Also, the place is so cheap they don't even have coasters. Only about 1 hour later did one waitress decide to put tissue paper under our wine glasses......

Seriously. I am NEVER going back to this place.
