Time Out says

This bar has closed.

Riding on the success of its Merry Men and Mad Men bars in central Singapore, The Merry Men group attempts to inch its drinks into slightly more serious territory with its new Men’s Room. The two-roomed bar, accessible via a narrow staircase to the right of The Pecking Order, is perched above the group’s Mediterranean tapas concept in Raffles Place.

Looking to cash in on the resurgence of the spirit in the city, The Men’s Room offers 11 and growing labels of artisanal gins ($12-$18) that the owners try to talk up as a manly drink on their Facebook page. A suave rendition of a members-only club, however, this is not.

The bar staff is clueless, and the menu is only marginally more helpful, especially when you realise that the descriptions for different gin are one and the same – copied and pasted in a fashion that screams sloppiness. The drinks programme displays further contempt for its target clientele, sullying the artisanal spirits on offer with its default mixer of saccharine-sweet Schwepps that smothers the delicate alchemy of botanicals crafted by the individual distillers. While premium tonics like Fever Tree, ‘Thomas Henri’ [sic] and East Imperial are available (and really necessary) to help you savour your drinks, you’ll have to take the initiative and request them – even then, expect to fork out a hefty $6 premium to rescue your tipple.

Order a bespoke cocktail at your own risk. The operational ethos here is clearly ignorance is bliss – only when further pressed and sent back to consult the bartender was our server able to tell us that the contents of the ‘specially made’, nameless cocktail on the list were lime cordial (an ingredient we certainly haven’t seen in a bar worth its salt in a while), lime juice, house pour Gordon’s gin and bitters. The bar even manages to conjure a dubious magic with this standard by masking Gordon’s harsh notes to naught in the drink. Real men should expect better – and The Merry Men really should know better.
