Wala Wala Cafe & Bar
published on Sep 03 2009 - 15:58

Holland Village has had quite a makeover over the past few years, but its old-faithful watering hole Wala Wala – affectionately known as Wala’s to locals – remains ensconced on Lorong Mambong. On the ground floor, enjoy a cold one at the distinctive yellow-lit bar and catch the game on one of several flat-screen TVs. The bar upstairs hosts a variety of local music and comedy acts, with an ‘acoustic happy hour’ from 7 to 8.30pm. The only annoying change at Wala’s is the new smoking policy – only a limited number of seats are available for smokers outdoors, so the remaining cigarette-puffing patrons have to hang around the adjoining alley like delinquent teenagers.

Slow service without anyone noticing you for at least 10 mins of waving to get a waiter's attention. Won't provide a little bit of extra service like getting you a glass of water if they don't expect a tip coming because they know you are unhappy. Snickers within earshot if tip not given due to the above mentioned subpar service. Worse of all, the 2 staff who attended to us on seperate occasions were the manager and operations manager. Imagine that! We are never stingy with tips but service should come before gratuity and not vice versa.

The previous comments is totally out of place. Yes, the service at Wala Wala is not always quick and the 1-for-1 deal usually gets disorganised (since many customers order only second before 9pm when the happy-hour deal ends), especially on weekends. (Just got back from there on a Saturday night, no problems at all with service this time.) However, to have the chutzpah to complain about a waitress not allowing herself to be called "F&%#$ing bitch" is beyond belief. Some customers think just because they throw around a lot of money they can treat overworked service personnel like a piece of dirt.

I went last night; had a server who claimed to be named XYZ [ed: name removed]. She gave us major attitude when we said we wanted to pay cash vs. credit card, rolling her eyes. Then we had been overcharged on the bill - two drinks ended up on the wrong tab and one of our friends had not received her free beer in the 1-for-1 deal. When we tried to rectify this, 3 different people came over and told us we were wrong. We had spent a huge amount of money between the 9 of us, and were not going to back down - we were definitely the largest group there and had spent a few hundred dollars! After a long ordeal, the waitress went back inside to get the beer that we had already paid for. As she was walking away, I said to a friend, "What a F$%Ting bitch." She then CAME OVER AND LECTURED me about why I should call people bitches for another 5 minutes, and STILL would not give us the drink we had already paid for. I told her I was sorry, that we just wanted to finish and get out of there, but I wanted to get her name anyways. She actually said, "My name is F%^& YOU bitch." I had to ask several other employees to get her name. I was totally, completely SHOCKED at her behavior considering the amount of money we spent. Next time we take the group out, we'll be going to Tango's, where the owner actually understands the value of good customer service.

I am there regularly on weekends, afternoon - early evening. Never had a problem with slow or bad service.
