Monte Carlo
First published on . Updated on 4 Jul 2011.

We all have those movies. Like Valley Girl (1983) or – depending on your age – Save the Last Dance (2001), this breezy if forgettable lark seems destined to be devoured by the ten-and-up set, who may not enjoy revisiting it with adult eyes. Gomez, Meester and Cassidy star as a trio of girls taking their first trip abroad to Paris, where Gomez’s Grace is mistaken for a royal heiress (a role she also plays). Grace goes along with it; the three land in Monte Carlo and get a taste of the sweet life for a short time before these misadventures catch up with them. Lessons are learned, hearts are broken, but happy endings aren’t far away.

Still, the movie isn’t without its charms. The actors are all likable, and the bit parts – a hotel desk clerk, a French police chief – are played to the hilt as wacky French stereotypes, adding a touch of Pink Panther-esque humor to the mix. Judy Sutton Taylor
