Ready to write that novel he’s always had on the back burner, a book editor (Craig) moves to the country with his wife (Weisz) and young daughters. Only it turns out that the chateau was the site of a horrible massacre five years earlier…and why’s everybody so squirrelly around their new neighbor? The fact that the film so rapidly dives into Shutter Island territory isn’t as surprising as how thoroughly filmmaker Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father) botches the material’s potential; any horror-film elements or sense of use-your-delusions tragedy show up already D.O.A. Then comes another twist—one so patently, laughably ridiculous that you just wish this cinematic nightmare would finally end. David Fear
