Opening the Thus Have I Seen (THIS) Buddhist Film Festival, this award-winning feature relives the story of the late Hong Yi, the esteemed Chinese Buddhist master best known today as one of the composers of the still popular song ‘Ode to the Triple Gems’. The film ventures down Yi’s path prior to his legacy as venerated master to when he was just Li Shutong (his birth name), a struggling artist and teacher surviving the upheaval of the Qing dynasty. Shutong’s artistry exhibited earnest talent, as well as threatening controversy. He was the first art teacher to introduce nude models to his painting class and Western songs to his music class – risky business during the stifling conservatism of early 20th-century China. Watch as his symbolic story unfolds into an enlightening tale that outshines the dark political setting.
