Appeared as 'Q&A: Seen better days' (Time Out Singapore Apr 2009)

The Days is set in the late 1980s, way before 20-year-old lead actor Justin Chan could even read his first line. Alexandra Karplus chats with the up-and-coming star as he reflects on his debut movie appearance.

This film attempts to capture turn-of-the-decade Singapore by chronicling the path taken by two brothers as they become part of a delinquent, trouble magnet gang. For Chan – who grew up with an older sister and was never one for fistfights – the experiences of his character Zi Long are far removed from his own upbringing…

Was the school that you went to anything like the one portrayed in The Days?

No, I’m not from that era. The film is [set] in the late ’80s and I was born at the end of that decade.

Do you know anyone older than you who was part of a gang?

My director, Boi Kwong, is from that era. My character is actually meant to portray Boi, the story is based on his life. He experienced everything from The Days’ era.

Your character has major regrets about bringing his little brother into his gang. What is your biggest regret?

I have something I regret from primary school. I didn’t study very well and played too much. I’m actually not originally from Singapore, I’m from Hong Kong. My parents spent all of their money and effort ensuring my sister and I had a good education. But I didn’t really study too much. Once I got into secondary school I studied a lot more, so I think I did pretty well.

In the film, Uncle Durian is constantly trying to offer your character good advice, however he refuses to take it. Have you had anyone like this in your own life?

I do have someone who is like a mentor to me. Also, during my primary school years – a friend from my church. He is around 20 years older than me, but he’s like a big brother to me. He taught me stuff in school and also showed me how to avoid the wrong things.

Do you think the film industry in Singapore is improving?

I think Singapore is doing really well. Especially since last year. A lot more films are going international.

You’re an actor and a singer. Which career are you more keen to pursue?

Singing is my real passion. I also sang during this movie.

What kind of music makes you break into song?

I like a lot of different kinds of music. I like Chinese pop songs, and sometimes jazz.

Tell us about your favourite musicians.

I’d have to say Jay Chou. Not only is he a musician but he brought himself into the film industry and directed his own movie. I really look up to him.

Any upcoming films or concerts?

Currently, no. Right now I am doing my National Service. I will be here until next May.

Do you have plans for when you finish National Service?

I will go and finish my studies. Also I would like to do any other movies that find me – I really love the entertainment industry.

The Days is available on DVD at Sinema Old School for $24.90.
