Wondering what to do with the children in the week-long school holiday this month? Jo Tan picks five of the best holiday activities in town
Jurong’s Snow City, South-East Asia’s only indoor ski slope, has an impressive range of kids’ courses. They can start off with basic ski and snowboard classes to sessions on how to make ice cream and snowmen. It’s not all focused on the cold; other activities throughout the year include storytelling, aerobic performances, jam sessions, treasure hunts, slides, games, a snow dragon and snow beast. But the opportunity to ski on this tropical island is still the standout attraction. 21 Jurong Town Hall Rd (6560 2306). Classes available 9.45am-6pm during school holidays. From $16. Ages 2 and above.
Sentosa also offers the rare chance to fly high. Standing at 56.5ft tall, iFly Singapore is the world’s tallest wind tunnel, and kids aged seven and above can experience the rush of a skydive in perfect safety, supervised by professional instructors at the world’s largest wind-tunnel training centre. #01-01, 43 Siloso Beach Walk, Sentosa (6571 0000). From $75 for ages 7-12, and $85 for kids over 12.
Disney on Ice’s newest show, Let’s Celebrate, is touring Asia and hits Singapore this month. The show features a whopping 52 Disney characters on the ice, from Mickey Mouse to The Nightmare before Christmas’ Jack Skellington. Themes range from beach parties to Halloween and Christmas. Best part? The under-two crowd gets in free. Indoor Stadium, 2 Stadium Walk. 15-18 Mar; Thu & Fri 3.30pm & 7pm; Sat & Sun 10am, 2pm & 6pm. $18.50-$88.50; free admission for children below 2.
Run by the Singapore iPhone Apps website, this impressive two-day workshop teaches kids aged 9-12 to create their very own iOS game using the GameSalad programme, from designing a storyboard to learning animation effects. At the end of the course, the game will then be published to an app store for other iPhone users to get hold of for long after the holidays are over. Various venues (9299 6066, www.singaporeiphoneapps.com/appsolutely-for-kids-workshop). 15-17 Mar, 9.30am-5pm. From $449. Ages 9-12.
No need for Malaysian islands or Thai getaways when you can swim with sharks or dolphins just a hop away on Sentosa. In Underwater World’s main aquarium, experienced guides lead kids aged 12 and above on 90-minute underwater tours that cross paths with grey sharks, eagle rays and much more. Water babies can also try an hourlong session at the Dolphin Lagoon with the intelligent and beautiful pink Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphins, which involves learning basic hand signals and swimming with the dolphins as they perform tricks. The price for both includes a T-shirt and admission to the Underwater World and Dolphin Lagoon. 80 Siloso Rd, Sentosa (6275 0030). By appointment, at least 3 days in advance. $120 to swim with sharks; $170 to swim with dolphins. Ages 12 and above.

While I appreciate your concern, don't be so blinkered and promote the zoo in the same breath. If the dolphins are damaged by being in captivity then so are other animals. Someone with a true affinity for animals would not promote the zoo to save the dolphins.

Please do not support the dolphin swim program at Resorts World Sentosa. Dolphins have proven to be the animal which is most badly affected by being kept in captivity.
Swimming with them and therefore encouraging resorts world to keep them in captivity, is in fact animal cruelty. Supporting the activity as the article does so above, is also animal cruelty. Please do not encourage this stupid ignorant mistreatment of the most intelligent creature in the sea. While photos may show them "smiling", dolphins live much shorter lives in captivity than in the wild, often dying of depression and homesickness.
Dolphins in resorts world sentosa are kept in captivity, in poor unnatural conditions. They are placed in pools without vegetation and other species, trained to do tricks by forceful methods and are forced to interact with strangers who essentially invade their habitat all day long.
Better activities for the holidays include iFly, universal studios, ski360, snow city etc. And if you would like to see animals, the best option is to see them in the wild were they roam about happily, or at least visit the Singapore Zoo, Jurong Bird Park or the Underwater-world in sentosa.
Please whatever you do, do not ever engage in dolphin related activities in resorts world sentosa, and do not show any support for this cruel program.
Thank you for your support and understanding. Together we can make a difference.
