Catch veteran American singer-songwriter Bill Callahan in Singapore for not only his first-ever show in South-East Asia, but also his only stop in the region. Formerly known as Smog, Callahan has forged a name for himself as one of the best examples of the New Weird America movement, an off-shoot of indie folk whose practitioners include Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom. But unlike them, Callahan and his softly spun tunes have a delicacy that belies their gravitas – he’s more interested in examining the innards of the human condition than he is crafting wild narratives about talking monkeys and bears, as his peers do. Callahan’s most recent album, 2013’s Dream River, drew critical acclaim for its laconic tone, hushed warmth and sparse – yet effective – instrumentation. Supported by guitarist Matt Kinsey and local folk musician Leslie Low.
