By Laura Dozier
First an Academy Award-winning movie in ’82, then a Broadway musical in ’95 – and now, after waiting for over a decade, Victor/Victoria is finally making its Asian premiere. The show will feature a dash of international star power: this new version stars Laura Fygi, a Dutch jazz singer with 11 albums to her name, who is making the trip to Singapore for her theatrical debut. Known for her sultry vocals, Fygi will take on the role of a down-on-her-luck singer who gets a shot at fame by becoming a drag queen. Pretending to be a man who dresses as a woman, Victoria (as her alter ego Victor) faces the age-old problem of finding professional success coupled with personal confusion. Catching the eye of handsome gangster King Marchan from Chicago (Jake Macapagal) – who tries to justify his interest by proving that Victor is not actually a man – Victoria battles with her own feelings of attraction, while trying to keep up her show-stopping ‘male’ appearances.
Songs by celebrated composer Henry Mancini, such as ‘Le Jazz Hot’ and ‘Crazy World’, will be the soundtrack for the Chicago-style dance numbers, brought to life by an international and local cast, including Singapore fashion stylist Daniel Boey, who will play the role of club owner Andre Cassell.
Known for her clever presentation of works that question sexual norms, Loretta Chen, director of the lascivious farce What the Butler Saw and the Asian premiere of The Vagina Monologues, seems perfectly suited and booted to lead this whimsical gender-bending romp through glamorous 1930s Paris. Her largest production to date, this theatrical spectacle promises to bring this revival to Singapore in true Broadway style – complete with bespoke costumes and spectacular sets that evoke the romantic mood of Paris, the extravagant courts of Louis XIV and the gritty streets of Chicago.
