The supperclub at Odeon Towers may not be related either to Miami’s Bed or Bangkok’s Bed Supperclub – even if it does bear striking similarities – but it still served up one of the most entertaining dinners I’ve had on this beat. For starters, there was something marvellously theatrical about being greeted in the bijou, mirror-lined foyer by Mistevious, a vivacious blonde bombshell, and Derrick, her bobhaired, cross-dressing cohort – and then being led up into the lipstick-red Rouge Bar with its giant mirrorballs. This in turn opens out onto a twolevel, all-white space lined with sheer curtains, huge beds and fluffy pillows. As the evening progressed, hidden lights changed the mood from blue to pink and every colour in between.
It’s a fantastical setting – like
2001: A Space Odyssey brought to life in the Tropics. And judging from the heaving Saturday night crowd, this is the hottest spot on the island right now. It cost $4 million to renovate this space (formerly Mod Living) into a hedonistic cocoon, and it shows. From the woofers hidden beneath the beds (when the music gets pumping, it’s like sitting on a washing machine in spin mode – but in a good way) to the stainless steel-lined open kitchen, it’s clear that someone got busy signing cheques right up to opening night.
Now, much has been said about the starters arriving in Styrofoam boxes. But who cares when it opens up into a red fan of smoked salmon on a bed of rocket leaves flecked with garlic and seaweed, and paired with a spicy disc of papadum? The rest of the fivecourse
dégustation menu (it changes every week) arrived on proper flatware, and there was something wonderfully Roman about nibbling on a perfectly seared lamb chop paired with corn-scented mash while reclining on a thick pile of white pillows.
Western and Asian flavours were played off each other with great skill. A thick mushroom soup was infused with ginger, coconut cream and chilli. The vegetarian option was equally good, with tempura lounging on a lemongrass risotto bed; as was the poached egg that crowned an artichoke heart, draped with a rich soy reduction. Under its skin, the snapper was snowy white and moist – never easy when catering for many people.
The leisurely pace of service allowed for languid glances at diners on other beds while sipping champagne. I barely noticed it was 11pm by the time the crème brûlée arrived in an ashtray. With the music now turned way up, the good times just kept on rolling. ‘Some people are having sex in a cubicle,’ announced a friend after returning from the all-black, sensationally louche unisex bathrooms.
There were low points, like a martini without olives, and the mid-dinner act involving a man balancing glasses of water on a chair. The entire room erupted into applause when a waitress bumped into it, causing it to fall with a crash, and landed flat on her derrière.
But in the end, how could you not have fun when drag queens work the reception, sassy Russian and Australian gals with just the right amount of attitude serve drinks, the food is good and the party really only gets started after dinner? The biggest surprise of the evening was that this was all happening here in Singapore.
4-course menu (vegetarian option available) $65++. There is only one 8.30pm seating for dinner, so don’t be late

Myself and several people have recounted incidents of the staff accidentally giving the wrong change by significant amounts. Too busy and undertrained or looking to top up their wages by preying on the rich and too drunk to count their change? I was neither and got my $60 back, no questions asked which makes me wonder. Anyway, you decide for yourselves.

Rude, arrogant, overpriced...and that mirrors the people going there too. As in Amsterdam it is a once in a lifetime experience for me. Once and NEVER again. Let's hope people start to understand that paying for overpriced drinks in a wannabe trendy setting does not make them better or cooler people - and that this space will soon house a nicer, friendlier bar.

let's start by saying that the supperclub format has proven very popular with its success in many other places in the world. obviously, they have done something right. however, in singapore, it's obvious they've totally missed the mark. imho, they are doomed. i was there recently and had a dispute with management about my final bill. this dispute was about the number of drinks charged on my tab. management claimed that my group had 5x more cocktails than we actually had. 5 times! and we are not talking about a 5-10 drinks here. we are talking abt an overcharge of S$1000+. in trying to settle the dispute, the managers lacked ANY customer service sense and essentially only attacked me and my friends (in absentia), and wouldn't back down. the managers didn't even offer a compromise or any other solution. they were not even able to pretend like my patronage was welcome. they were pompous, argumentative and stubborn. i have *never* been treated so poorly. and instead of standing behind strong operational procedures (like ensuring that the tab "card" they issue is always presented etc etc) and asking confirmation from the bartenders (who were sheepishly hiding at the other end of the bar pretending to be busy - they bar was empty), all the managers could do was to assault my character and my judgement. it was astonishing. i am still astonished. this experience is very disappointing because i wld like to be hopeful that such experience was an anomaly. obviously it wasn't. PS i agree with julian about that french woman 100%. too much time at french waiter school.
