Zhi-char goes up-market, though this has not been used as an excuse to crank prices up to unreasonable levels: Most dishes hover around the $10 mark, with seafood items pushing prices into the high teens. There’s nothing fancy here, just old-fashioned food of the kind one would expect in neighbourhood zhi-char joints, but with a little more polish. Try the Grade AAA tofu, the whispery crisp skin breaking under the weight of its braised minced-prawn-and-pork topping to reveal a satiny, pale interior. The fried chicken recalls the best of Granny’s cooking – little battered nuggets flavoured with shards of dried chilli, vinegar and onion crescents.
