In Chinatown, an ode to the kopitiam
Oriole Coffee Roasters’ ‘Chief Geek Officer’ and 2010 National Barista champion Keith Loh isn’t resting on his laurels. His third café – a nod to Singapore’s kopitiam past – has opened up in an immaculate shophouse on the outskirts of Chinatown with saloon-style doors. There’s plenty to peruse: vintage Guinness glasses, locally sourced bric-à-brac, and South American beansacks. The Dietrich IR7 (nicknamed ‘Ella’) machine – moved over from the Pan Pacific Serviced Suites branch – ups the QC quotient. On the second floor, there’s an area for Loh to train hopefuls aiming to emulate his accolade. It all looks fabulous, and the self-evident savvy on show lends the café a superior class to its near neighbour The Plain.
