What more to say about Cheah Sun Kee except that it serves some of the best sweet-and-sour pork this side of heaven? Set along a row of beautiful art deco apartments, the tables spill out onto the alley, filled with chattering families and a sprinkling of the artsy set. Also excellent are the Cantonese porridge (breakfast only and wildly popular), braised tofu, fried beef noodles and to-die-for deep-fried chicken marinated with prawn paste. There’s no air conditioning, so come at night, when the weather is cooler and the vibe distinctly retro.
