This reliable zhi-char joint comes with the added bonus of warm smiles from the bosses, Ah Lek and Ah Hong. But the main draw here is the deep-fried crab marinated with a thick crust of salted egg yolk. Equally good are the bubbling claypot of liver infused with the intense earthiness of chives and onions; the braised tofu topped with minced pork; and the huge chunk of river fish head perfectly cooked in bean sauce – a steal at $18. When the weather gets warm, head indoors to the air-conditioned building across the courtyard.
