Eat shoots and leaves, but don’t know where to go for your greens? Celine Asril finds five food spots where animal-lovin’ plant-chompers can veg out
BEST FOR: THE GRAINY VEGETARIAN
While their organic ‘mocktails’ such as Purple Rain (red cabbage and grapes) and ABC (apple, beetroot and carrot), may not help anyone quit the bottle, they can give you that extra rush of vitamins that your body needs. Keep in mind that this kitchen doesn’t restrict you to a liquid diet; the menu also carries a plethora of dishes both Western (pumpkin salad with plum sauce and apple cider vinaigrette) and Asian (tofu and gingko nuts with vegetables stewed in a clay pot), and fills both with a variety of grains and nuts. 9 Raffles Boulevard (6298 8198, www.7-sensations.com). MRT: Promenade. Mon-Fri 11am-3pm, 6-10pm; Sat & Sun 11am-10pm. Main courses $4.50-$16.
BEST FOR: THE MOCK VEGETARIAN
Guilt-free carcass can be found in Deli-Vege’s black-pepper ‘steak’ and mock prawns. The menu’s mish-mash of ingredients can be confusing, but there’s no garlic, eggs or MSG used, the ingredients are fresh and the portions satisfying. 200 South Bridge Road (6223 9686, www.deli-vege.blogspot.com). MRT: Chinatown. Daily 11am-11pm. Main courses $5-$25.
BEST FOR: THE MEATY VEGETARIAN
The tender monkeyhead mushrooms that fill this menu can help ease the transition into a meat-free diet. They produce that ‘I can’t believe it’s not meat’ texture that many can’t live without. The ’shrooms are served as crispy thin slices, bite-size pieces floating in clear broth, and braised chunks with wolfberry and Sichuan vegetables. 99 Upper East Coast Road (6348 0668, www.naivecompany.com). MRT: Paya Lebar, then take a taxi. Daily 11.30am-3pm, 5.30-10pm. Main courses $10-$15.
BEST FOR: THE ROOTED VEGETARIAN
Take the opportunity to neutralise your holiday toxins and openly worship garlic and onion flavours, plant food and baked goodies, all without having to turn to dairy, eggs or animal fat. We suggest slurping up the almond basil pasta or meat-free zha jiang mian (noodles). Also, take a bite of their super-healthy home-made vegetarian cookies – select your treats made with lemon pumpkin flaxseed or cashew nut. 1 Lorong Telok (6438 7118, www.genesishealthfood.blogspot.com). MRT: Raffles Place. Mon-Thu 8am-8pm; Fri-Sun 8am-3pm. Main courses $5.90-$12.
BEST FOR: THE LIQUID VEGETARIAN
LingZhi’s philosophy of no eggs, garlic, onions, animal oil or mock meats still brews up extraordinary soups and vividly imaginative stir-fries. Along with a mushroom hotpot buffet, the menu also offers both steamed and fried dim sum dumplings and buns, all minus the meat. #05-01 Liat Towers, 541 Orchard Road (6734 3788, www.lingzhivegetarian.com). MRT: Orchard. Daily 11am- 3pm, 6-10pm. Sets from $22 to $35 per person.

These are just the high end expensive vegetarian places. Not really much research has gone into this. A more accurate guide for anyone wanting to get a better understand would be Hungry Ang Moh's website.

Original Sin at Jalan Merah Saga is an outstanding vegetarian restaurant. Forget about Deli Vege- boring, bland, vego food with almost all recipes based on artificial meat products.

Thank you for doing this. I have two whole family of relatives who are vegetarians and they would love to read this. am passing it on.
I don't think they've tried some of the ones suggested in the article and in the comments so I'm definitely telling them about it!! Do more vegetarian reviews, I think it would serve the general pubic and vegetarian community well because people are starting to realise that vegetarian cuisine is not boring or filling enough and are willing to give more vegetarian places a shot. which ultimately is great for the earth and animals.
