Who knew that such a good northern Indian restaurant was squirrelled away in the basement of a Holiday Inn? The ornate, upmarket setting of heavy fabrics and a fountain with a pond sets the scene for first-rate curries and tandoori meats. The flavours are intense, with many items not normally found in local Indian restaurants – like the salty, oddly addictive ka panna drink made of crushed roasted pineapples tinged with cumin and mint, and the buttery naan embossed with dried fruits. The servings are large: our doggy-bagged fried ladies fingers dusted with mango powder, a pile of curried roast potatoes, and baby eggplant braised with tamarind made for perfect snacks the next day.
