Taking over the space formerly occupied by American diner-style Botak Jones, Jim Thompson's newest outlet is a café during the day and a bar at night. There's no obvious signage or doorway: to get here you need to walk down a gravel road located off Minden Road. It can get tricky in the dark, but what greets you inside is worth it: a red bar adorned with vintage Thai movie posters and a black-and-white photo of King Chulalongkorn (the father of modern Thailand). But the best seats are outside. Far away from the Dempsey clusters, all you'll see is a plot of unmown grass behind chicken wire fence – people would pay for this view in modern Singapore.
