Run by the ladies behind Epicurious, the sparsely decorated Persimmon saves the bells and whistles for the small but thoroughly entertaining fusion menu (beef rendang Wellington, anyone?). The eggplant fritters are nostalgic reminders of Penang’s goreng pisang. Laksa flavours lurk beneath the puffy crust of the fisherman’s pie, while the aglio olio is given a twist with the wonderfully salty crunch of Chinese roast pork. Less impressive (and at $20, expensive) was the Foie Gras Folly – two tiny xiao long bao barely flavoured with the advertised liver. Headlining the dessert menu is a superbly buttery fruit crumble paired with banana ice cream.
