In a fickle town like Singapore, it means something when a restaurant has been in business since 1953. The home-style cooking here is lush and intensely flavoured. Best of all, prices are extremely reasonable for the portions: an $8 small serving will easily feed two. Among the dishes to try are fried discs of squid, with the evocative taste of smoky belachan, and eggplant braised in soy sauce. Fluffy fooyong is streaked with tiny prawns and crabmeat, while pork strips sautéed in chilli and assam are the perfect comfort food. For dessert, the chendol, drenched in a white blanket of coconut cream, is unforgettable.
