Crowd-pleasing Thai fare on Liang Seah Street

You will not be blamed for letting your mind wander into the gutter and assuming this is a new KTV lounge or the latest neon-lit ‘toy’ shop. But rest assured (or be left disappointed), Porn’s is no more than a no-frills Thai bistro donning a ‘Sexy Thai Food’ tagline to add a little Thai-inspired pizzazz to bustling Liang Seah Street.

So why all the buzz? The proprietor is none other than the bubbly Pornsak Prajakwit, the popular Thai-Chinese MediaCorp artiste – also dubbed an ‘auntie killer’ – whose little hole-in-the-wall has been drawing starstruck fans and aunties in droves. This fresh-faced celebrity-turned-entrepreneur has the recipe for success: star quality, quick service (by a young, sometimes clueless crew) and a clean, rustic, whitewashed café-like ambience with crowd-pleasing Thai fare.
 
The tom yam goong (tom yum soup with prawns) packed a punch with a sweet-and-tart, tongue-scorching consomme streaked with spring onions, lemongrass, tomatoes and generous servings of plump prawns that easily feed four; while the creamy and satin-smooth green curry with chicken chunks and aubergine wedges was near-perfect, save for the pearls of pea aubergine that failed to make an appearance.

Fried kang kong with fermented bean paste and garlic dices was homey and lush, as was the utterly fragrant oil-fluffed omelette with chopped-up prawns. The only letdown during our dinner was the signature seafood fried rice, which tasted bland – did the kitchen forget the fish sauce? A sweet ending came with the lip-smacking durian, studded with black and white sesame seeds and warm, sticky rice. Those who do not worship the King of Fruits can opt for mango.

Rest assured that Porn’s success is based on more than its owner’s celebrity status alone: these dishes are filled with star-studded flavours that will help you reach a hot (and we mean spicy, you dirty little thing) climax. Eve C
