What do you get when you cross tom yum soup with a German lager? Tawandang Microbrewery. Yet another addition to the perennially hip enclave of Dempsey Hill, this Thai-owned restaurant offers an unusual pairing. Three signature German beers are brewed on-site and can be paired with dishes like flaming tom yum goong with river prawns, and papaya salad with salted crab. Those looking to follow a more traditional route can opt for melt-in-your-mouth deep-fried pork knuckle and sausages, topped up with sauerkraut. Every night the cavernous restaurant reverberates with the innately nasal but endearing sounds of an authentic Thai band, delivering local ballads and English covers, as well as Sunday afternoons. While its sheer size makes it hard to attract waiting staff, Tawandang has the type of atmosphere you cannot ‘beer’ to pass up.
