Flavourful health foods near Botanic Gardens
‘Refresh, revive & rejuvenate’ is TLC’s tagline, and judging by the Botox-free, 50-going-on-20 look of its staff and disciples, it’s no empty boast. There may be no shortage of vegetarian restaurants in this city, but Singapore has nothing quite like this: a one-stop veggie/vegan café, health shop and lifestyle-improvement space overseen by Balanced Living founder Dana Heather (‘an expert on fasting, colon cleansing and detoxification’).
Given their strict renunciation of evils such as red meat, cow dairy, white sugar, preservatives, additives and colourings, the range of all-natural goodness rustled up by roving raw-food chefs Manuela Scalini and Hoo Soon Fock is astonishing: just witness the menu, which verges on overwhelming.
Typical fare includes Raw Taco Boats (mock taco, guacamole and mango salsa on romaine lettuce, $12); Wasabi Burger with Grilled White Fish ($12); and Brown Rice Fish Nori Rolls ($12); and the ‘Liver Flush Yield’ juice (orange, garlic, olive oil, cayenne).
Delicious without being didactic, TLC’s smart-casual, open-concept space provides a thoroughly modern environment for appreciating what have been, until recently, strictly niche food preferences.
Cost: Appetisers/soups/salads $6-$15; rolls/wraps/sandwiches $10-$16; pizzas/pasta/burgers $12-$22; kids’ menu $4-$10; desserts $2.50-$8.50; juices/smoothies $6-$8.
