Considering its location in one of Singapore’s busiest malls, Wood could be a nightmare to get into on any given night. Luckily, when we visited on a Friday evening, it wasn’t – we booked only half an hour before and were given a cosy curved leather booth inside. Word’s sure to get out on this new bar/restaurant, with its efficient service and addictive smoky smells. Wood’s speciality smoked, grilled and roasted food is fantastic – be careful as it tends to lead to overeating. ‘Ang Mo chicken satay’ (say what?) was the best I have had, though the onion salad was a little disappointing. The claypot duck and corn on the cob smelt and tasted great. The two letdowns were forgivable as the food was so enjoyable: first, the staff’s inability to produce hot coffees – both macchiato and latte were still cold after being sent back once. Second (and worse) – my credit card was declined by a waiter who said, ‘There is something wrong with this card.’ Upon checking my account online the next day, my account and card were fine. This is not the first time this has happened; waiters, take note: telling people their card has been declined when it hasn’t is likely to cause lasting indigestion.

For most hearts, the best time to visit is before sunset and beat everyone else to the best seat in the house - the huge lounge seat for couples or groupies. With cocktails in hand, wait for the beautiful sunset before your eyes. Then proceed to your reserved booth seats indoors for some cosiness or romance. Depends. Many of the wood-fired dishes will bring much pleasure to your palate which eventually leads to your heart..
