To explain the name: Briton George Kirton moved to Singapore two years ago to set up this wine store. The ‘Beer Room’ at the back, he says, simply burgeoned. This shophouse cellar now has about 300 wines and 90 beers. The shop’s specialities are British ciders, but Kirton also stocks five German beers – a Warsteiner Pilsner, König Ludwig Weißbier and three types of Memminger (Lager Schwarz, Weißbier and Premium Pilsner). He shares picks based on personal experience: for a typical Oktoberfest meal he recommends a Memminger, but advises shaking it a little before pouring for a thick head. German beers, he says, produce a much thicker, creamier and sweeter head than most beers. The Memmingers also come in bigger (500ml) bottles, in line with the Oktoberfest tradition of big drinking.
