Getting a hair blowout – no, not the recently trendy Brazilian keratin treatment that’s a semi-permanent solution to frizzy hair (or the greasy hairstyle Pauly D has been rocking on The Jersey Shore), but the simpler, old-school practice of blow-drying your hair to get a bouncy, volumised finish – has been all the rage for those looking for star-worthy bombshell hair. There have been plenty of tips for achieving the look at home after a shower, but there’s nothing quite like a perfectly executed blowout from a salon professional, with results that can last for up to several days. But now, with Blow+Bar, we finally have a place in Singapore that offers just that – and it hopes to make going to the salon for one a new social activity to boot.
Noticing a gap in the market for a fun hair bar where ladies can get their hair coiffed, secondary school friends Diana Goh and Ashley Soh set up the salon concept and pounced on a vacant space along the café-dotted Rodyk Street stretch by Robertson Quay. The concept here is pretty simple: pick from a menu of final looks from the salon’s iPad, get a treatment to solve certain hair woes, add on extras like a manicure or a trim and then select a drink – the unique selling point here is a complimentary glass of Merlot or Sauvignon Blanc to complete the indulgent experience.
Soh also throws in her years of working in marketing for L’Oreal’s hair brands and swears by the Kerastase and L’Oreal shampoos and treatments that the salon’s stylists use to nurture tresses. Save for the salon-standard hair heaters and wash bays, Blow+Bar’s space is more reminiscent of a pastry café or bar, with a menu of treatment packages greeting you on entry and only the occasional mirror to remind you that you’re here to get your hair taken care of. ‘We didn’t even want mirrors in here, but the stylists said they needed it to help style,’ says Soh. ‘We wanted this to be more a fun place to visit than an actual salon.’
While it works toward maintaining a more social lifestyle concept the salon is going for, we did find the shorter chairs a bit off-putting, with only the tops of our heads visible in the mirror over the taller bar counter. Prices vary according to hair length, but a basic blowout, which includes a wash, massage and style, ranges from $35-$48; additional services like hair repair treatments, manicures (from $20) or the L’Oreal Mythic Oil & Scalp Ritual ($110-$170) can be added on.
We recommend the Ultimate Blow Out package ($70-$98), which adds an intensive hair treatment to the basic package, using shampoos and hair masks that are tailored to address concerns like an oily scalp, chemical damage or frizzy hair. Treatments last no longer than an hour and 15 minutes, making it quick enough to pop by for a pre-date, pre-party or lunchtime treatment. The basic hair wash also involves an intensive double cleanse, which Soh explains is meant to extend the life of the wash by giving the scalp time to rest from chemicals in the shampoos and conditioners in between; we also enjoyed the substantial head massage we received during the hair wash, which helped ease our mid-day tensions.
Even with an added basic manicure ($20) to our package, which involves a clip, polish and finishes off with a coating of OPI’s Drip Dry quickdrying oil, we were out the door before the session’s one-hour promise was up. The blowout not only left our manes incredibly soft, but delivered the look we requested for. Though the volumised look we also wanted couldn’t quite stand the test of monsoon season humidity, we can see ourselves coming back to get an updo or coif before a glamorous night out.
Blow+Bar also offers basic trims (from $28 for men, $38 for women) and other salon regulars like perms (from $100), keratin treatments (from $320) and colouring (from $90) to round up the whole experience.
