Love her or hate her, Hello Kitty is undeniably a part of our pop culture. Drawn into existence in 1974 by Yuko Shimizu, she has left an indelible mark on little girls and grown-ups, and is loved by the likes of Tyra Banks and Paris Hilton. The two-eyed and no-mouth (does anyone else wonder how she speaks?) Hello Kitty has been emblazoned on almost everything – toasters, lunchboxes, laundry hampers, cellphone charms, sticker pads, wallets, handbags…the list goes on. Passionate collectors look out for the ‘Made in Japan’ and ‘Sanrio Original’ stamps before purchasing, which indicate the items was made in Japan and not produced in China, Germany or Hong Kong, where it has a licensing arm. Kitty Love sells both original and licensed products at the store and online. Hard-to-fi nd collectables include the Hello Kitty cellphone ($888), in pink of course, and a Spider guitar ($399) with a huge ‘Hello Kitty’ painted on it in black and pink versions. Take note: these bigticket items need to be ordered ahead of time, but in the mean time there are stationery items, household additions and costume jewellery for sale.
