Beyond Xtreme

Health and fitness consultancy Beyond Xtreme is adding beginner kickboxing classes to its roster. Croyez Studio

Variation class: PowerBox
Prefer peacefulness while working out? At this Dempsey Hill studio, 40-minute ladies-only PowerBox classes are held three times a week. Health-conscious women warriors can straddle the Power Plate, a vibrating device used to improve muscular strength and flexibility. The Plate bobs and oscillates, working out different muscles in your legs while classic kickboxing moves are executed. #03-06 Block 8D Dempsey Rd (6474 4136, www.croyezstudio.com). $428 for 10 group sessions, $824 for 10 individual sessions. Tue & Thu 8.30-9.10pm, Wed 7.45-8.25pm.

Fight Works Asia

Variation class: Boxing
Give your legs a rest and concentrate on the fists: Fight Works Asia’s thrice-daily classes take your arm’s musculature and endurance to a whole new level. The chief instructor here is Arvrind Lalwani, who trained under the same trainer as trash-talk legend Muhammad Ali – so you will surely float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. 1018 East Coast Parkway (6449 9821, www.fightworksasia.com.sg). $25 for first lesson, $35 for subsequent lesson, unlimited classes $250 per month. Weekdays 12.30pm-1.30pm, 5.30-6.30pm, 8-9pm.

Hilltop the Gym

Variation class: Beginner fitness
Some like it authentic, some want to learn its beauty and culture; muay thai fighter Ajarhn Johnnie Yeo wants to teach it in its most traditional form at Hilltop’s daily classes. Instead of the usual treadmills and weightlifting, you will pick up forgotten muay thai moves, attacking your opponent with your knees and elbows. Soon you will be defending yourself with an automatic blow-lock-kick. #01-05 Central Square, 20 Havelock Rd (6557 0105, www.hilltopthegym.com). $500 for 20 lessons. Mon-Fri 6.30-8pm and 8.15-9.45pm; lunchtime classes Mon, Wed, Fri 12.30-1.30pm; free trial classes Sat 5-6pm.

Vanda Boxing Club

Variation class: Muay thai
Muay thai is for brave souls who want to practise self-defence or bulk up their bodies. The meaner cousin of kickboxing which we call ‘The Art of Eight Limbs’, it swiftly uses punches, kicks, elbows, and knees on your opponent. At Vanda Boxing Club, professional boxers will take you under their wing. Consider this your first step to becoming the next Tony Jaa. #03-00 Ganges Centre, 554 Havelock Rd (6305 2288, www.vandaboxing.com). Unlimited classes: $175 per month for one year, $200 per month for six months. Mon-Fri 6pm-9pm; free trial classes Mon & Wed 6-7pm.
