Come July, it’s time to rumble in the jungle at one of Asia’s biggest music festivals. As always, expect an eclectic line-up of musicians. Acts you can enjoy this year include Red Chamber from Canada, who are inspired by ancient Chinese music; shamanistic Korean drumming from Noreummachi; and four-piece Finnish ensemble Jouhiorkesteri, a ‘Horse-Hair Orchestra’ that specialises in playing the ancient indigenous jouhikko (bowed lyre). Conventional music is definitely not on this festival’s menu, and since the foothills of Mount Santubong are only 35km from Kuching, take a chance and broaden your musical horizons.
