For a weird break in Tianjin, which has just been opened up by Scoot's cheap flights, you could so worse than stay at the Binhai Aircraft Hotel, an old aircraft carrier that's been repurposed as a lavishly tacky hotel - think silver lamé lounges, cowhide rugs and nightly performances in the Russian restaurant, decked out in hippopotamus and fi sh sculptures. Or for RMB160/S$32, you can just go on board and poke around the control room and missile holding docks.

Doubles from RMB1,288/$256 per night. See www.binhaipark.cn (Mandarin only). Scoot flies to Tianjin from $99 (one-way). See www.flyscoot.com.
